SEO - Search Engine Optimization That Works

If you do a Google search on "seo," you'll get around 277 Million results! If you spell it out as "search engine optimization," there are still more than 28 Million. That's a lot of talk and writing about SEO. With more than 59,000 results for "seo guru," who are we to believe about search engine optimization, and how can we make it happen for our web site through content management?

Let's take it from a purely logical, no-hype, approach. What do the search engines want to accomplish, and what do we want to accomplish?

  • We want to provide information that our visitors want and will use to purchase a product or service we are offering.
  • The search engines want desperately to steal users from each other, with all the rest shooting for more users and trying to catch up to Google.
  • How did Google get to be the biggest? Word of mouth launched their search numbers into the stratosphere because the results were more relevant and usable by the searchers.

All that's very logical, but how does it help us? It's simple, in that we really have our interests totally in line with that of the search engines. Where most get into trouble, or where they fail at SEO, is in ignoring this and trying tricks or black hat techniques to fool the engines.

If the search engines want to provide the MOST RELEVANT results to keep searchers returning, then it's only logical that our pages should have highly useful, informative and site subject relevant content. So, here is the simple solution to long term success in SEO for your site:

  • Develop content that is detailed and specific to your products or services.
  • Break it out into logical sub-pages that each address a particular search phrase or a couple of phrases.
  • Tie the Meta information, page title, keywords, and description, closely to the content of the page.
  • Find a site content management solution that not only allows you to do this easily, but helps you to do it well.

The Pro Page Manager starts you out with some templates for pages that are set up to best facilitate the objective of that page. Then you are presented with the building blocks to create the content and tie the important Meta information to the content of the page. By simplifying the creation of web pages, content and meta information, ProPage Manager encourages the more logical and effective break-out of information into smaller pieces, each targeted more effectively at one searchable topic.

Let's take an example from the medical field. Let's say that a physician's site is speaking to a specific treatable condition, let's call it SEOism. The tendency is to create a huge page, with a description of SEOism, it's symptoms, how it's diagnosed, and treatments. You end up with perhaps thousands of words, all about SEOism, but all over the map when it comes to addressing any one of several possible search phrases. This dilutes the power of the page, even though it has a huge amount of valuable information.

Here's how it should be done:
  • One page is created describing the condition and written to optimize for searches on "seoism." This would be a description and history of the condition, possibly including those most at risk.
  • One page is created for the search "seoism symptoms" and "symptoms of seosim." Though you could provide a brief synopsis of symptoms in the previous page, it would link over to this page off the "symptoms" word on that page. Here you would go into detail.
  • Lastly, a page targeting "seoism diagnosis and treatment" and "seoism treatments" would be created. Here is great detail on the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. If follow-up is significant, you might have yet another page for that.

Good SEO isn't just links out of a site, it's relevant intra-site links. So, each of these pages, when using the words related to the others, would link to those pages. ProPage Manager makes all this easy for you. And then yet one more step brings it all together as an effective search engine optimization solution. The Sitemap tools in ProPage Manager are excellent in allowing you to logically map out your pages in relation to each other, and to let the search engines easily crawl the content via the sitemap.
